Aim: What is the purpose of government?  

Bell Ringer: Journal 1 – Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both subscribed to the social contract theory of government. Analyze their views of that theory. 

 Objectives:

2. 1. Students will examine the constitutional principles of representative government, limited government, consent of the governed, rule of law, and individual rights.  

2. 2. Students will define federalism, and identify examples of the powers granted and denied to states and the national government in the American federal system of government.
